HICKSVILLE, NY — The Hicksville community came together Sunday to learn fire safety during the holiday season thanks to members of the Hicksville Fire Department. The department's annual Holiday Fire Prevention open house Sunday was a rousing success, with hundreds of residents coming to the fire house on West John Street.

Residents watched demonstrations on car crashes and house fires, learned how to prevent Christmas trees from igniting, and received smoke detectors and battery-operated candles. The board of fire commissioners and department chiefs made sure everyone left with a working smoke detector.

To cap off the event, parents and kids got to ride on fire trucks and, of course, meet Santa Claus, who took a break out of his busy schedule to meet with boys and girls on the "nice" list.
