Overcrowded High School To Lease Space At Nassau Community College

The space will alleviate overcrowding issues at the high school.

Westbury High School was granted access to space at Nassau Community College to alleviate overcrowding during the upcoming school year.

The New York State Education Department announced the solution to the spacing issues at Westbury High School and Middle School on Thursday. About 400 ninth graders will be sent to Nassau Community College.

According to Sen. Elaine Phillips, this is an essential move to provide the students with quality education. “I commend the Westbury Central School District for their efforts and NYSED for recognizing the importance of putting students’ needs first,” she said in a press release.

Westbury Superintendent Eudes Budhai said earlier this month the district urgently needed to lease space to prevent an overcrowding situation at the start of the 2017-18 school year.

Phillips immediately contacted the State Education Department Commissioner MaryEllen Elia after learning about Westbury’s urgent need for space. The request was originally denied, but she worked with the school and SED officials over the course of the next few weeks to come to a solution.

“Providing a safe learning environment is paramount to students, faculty and staff and I am extremely pleased that the SED granted Westbury permission for a one-year lease to utilize Nassau Community College space,” Phillips said.
