Heat Index To Reach 102 On Thursday, Advisory Issued On LI

The area's heat index values are expected to go as high as 102 on Thursday and Friday, the National Weather Service said.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A heat advisory is will go into effect for Long Island on Thursday, as heat index values are expected to reach as high as 102 degrees.

The National Weather Service said a heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

The advisory will begin at 11 a.m. and end on Friday at 9 p.m.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk.

The service encourages all to use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

In cases of heat stroke, call 911, the service said.

On Long Island, Thursday is expected to reach a high of 89, but heat index values will go as high as 98.
