21M Square Feet Of Apartments Are Going Up In Queens: DOB

A new interactive map released by the city's Department of Buildings will show you which ones are going up in your neighborhood.

QUEENS, NY -- Queens' real estate industry is booming, according to a new map that shows nearly 21 million square feet of apartments going up across the borough.

The NYC Department of Buildings released a real-time interactive map on Wednesday of all major construction projects in the city, which adds up to nearly 200 million square feet of building space across the city's five boroughs.

The map is the latest in a series of interactive tools the DOB has released to give the public better insight into its extensive data collection, said Commissioner Rick Chandler. Residents can find detailed information on any construction project they desire, whether it's down the block or across the city.

"New York has always been defined by change, and that remains true today, with major construction projects taking place in every neighborhood across the five boroughs," Chandler said.

"The public owns this data, and we are committed to putting it to work for all New Yorkers."

The map shoes all active permits issued by the DOB for both new buildings and alterations, and it automatically updates as permits are approved and expire. Users can filter data by building type, number of units, cost, square footage, contractor name or even community board boundaries.

As for Queens, the map shows more than 37.4 million square feet of total construction projects across the borough. Apartments and family housing makes up the bulk of it, covering just over 24 million square feet combined. Hotel and business construction accounts for about 3.6 million and 3.4 million square feet, respectively. School construction comes in last at just 2 million square feet.

Queens had 2,448 active permits on the map as of Friday. The borough's largest construction cluster lies in the confines of Community Board 2, where roughly 12 million square feet of projects are being built across Long Island City and Sunnyside.
