Nowick, McCarthy Win Seats on Smithtown Town Board, Malloy Falls Short

Democrats Adam Halpern and Rich Macellaro fall short of votes necessary to gain edge in town.

Lynne Nowick will follow in her father's footsteps by serving on Smithtown Town Board alongside re-elected Thomas McCarthy.Ā

Republican Lynne Nowick, R-St. James, has won herself a seat on Smithtown Town BoardĀ with 10,516 votes on Tuesday night, and will make the transition from serving Suffolk County Legislature's 13th district to the Town of Smithtown.Ā She will take the place of serving Councilman Kevin Malloy, running as a Conservative, who only received 4,519 votes.Ā

RepublicanĀ Councilman Thomas McCarthy hasĀ also beenĀ re-election to another 4-year term by receivingĀ 11,696 votes.Ā

Democratic challengers Adam Halpern and Rich Macellaro were unable to successfully wedge their way into a seat on the town board, coming up short with 5,464 votes and 5,745 votes respectively.Ā

By winning a seat on Smithtown Town Board, Nowick follows in the footsteps of her late father Eugene Cannataro - also a Smithtown Councilman. Forced to leave the Suffolk County legislature upon reaching the 12-year term limit, she looked to an elected positionĀ in Smithtown.Ā

Nowick had to submit a petitionĀ to run for a seat on Smithtown Town Council in July 2013 with roughly 1,350 signatures - more than twice the 500 signatures needed. By doing so, she created a three-way GOP race against incumbents Malloy and McCarthy.Ā

Nowick won the most votes in the Sept. 10Ā Republican primary with 3,830 votes, beating out bothĀ McCarthy who receivedĀ by 3,216 votes Ā and Malloy with onlyĀ 2,937 votes.Ā

The former Suffolk County legislator said she hopes to unite a "divided" town board and has promised to stand united with Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and McCarthy in opposition to the St. Johnlands project proposed off Route 25A in Kings Park.Ā

Nowick, in agreement with Vecchio, has promised toĀ fight for protection of open space within the town and business developments in appropriate areas.Ā
