Suffolk Man Gets 18 Years After Rape, Attempted Murder Of Woman

The man held the woman against her will overnight at a home in Kings Park in 2020 and then barricaded himself next door, prosecutors say.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A Medford man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the April 2020 rape and attempted murder of a woman in Kings Park, Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini announced Friday.

Mark Reyes, 44, pleaded guilty on July 16 to several charges, including attempted murder and rape.

"This defendant put the victim through two days of psychological terror and physical abuse and put several others – including children – in harm’s way during this tear of violence," Sini said via news release. "This was a nightmare for the victim and her family. Nothing can take away the pain and trauma this individual inflicted, but this is a significant prison sentence that holds him accountable for his actions. I’d like to thank Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier for her painstaking work and care in prosecuting this case, and the many police officers and Good Samaritans who risked their safety to apprehend this dangerous individual."

Reyes was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 years in prison with 10 years of post-release supervision.

On April 25, 2020, Reyes was in a Kings Park home with a woman who was previously known to him and her two children. At 8 p.m., Reyes began arguing with the woman, and he then took her cell phone and disabled the Wi-Fi and other electronic devices in the home, preventing her from calling 911.

Reyes then assaulted and raped the woman while occasionally brandishing a knife he found in the kitchen. He also threatened to kill her or harm her and her children. Reyes held the victim against her will overnight by tying her wrist to his with a phone charger cord to ensure she could not leave.

The next morning, the woman asked Reyes for her phone back to call out of work. She sent several messages to acquaintances to contact police for her. When Reyes saw the messages, while in the presence of the woman's children, Reyes once again threatened to maim or kill the woman. The woman told one of the children to run to a neighbor’s house for help, and the neighbor called 911.

The woman set off her car’s panic alarm, and Reyes then physically assaulted her, including stabbing her in the face multiple times with a knife. The woman escaped the home and entered a neighbor’s house with her two children.

Reyes ran from the house and kicked in the back door of a nearby house on Rumford Road at 9:35 a.m., April 26, 2020.

Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Section officers and members of the hostage negotiation team went to the house. Emergency Service Section officers were able to enter the home and bring a 77-year-old woman who lived in the house to safety while Reyes barricaded himself in an upstairs bathroom. The woman was not injured.

At 5:45 p.m., after eight hours of attempted negotiations, Emergency Service Section officers arrested Reyes.

Reyes pleaded guilty to attempted murder (a class B felony); first-degree assault (a class B felony); first-degree rape (a class B felony); first-degree criminal sexual act (a class B felony); second-degree aggravated sexual abuse (a class C felony); second-degree burglary (a class C felony); second-degree assault (a class D felony); aggravated criminal contempt (a class D felony); second-degree criminal mischief (a class D felony); two counts of second-degree unlawful imprisonment (a class A misdemeanor); criminal obstruction of breathing (a class A misdemeanor); fourth-degree criminal mischief (a class A misdemeanor); two counts of endangering the welfare of a child (a class A misdemeanor); and second-degree menacing (a class A misdemeanor).

Reyes was represented by Michael Brown.
