Ponds, Rivulets, and Coastlines Inside the Larchmont Library
Larchmont artist Hilda Green Demsky presents a series of nature- and water-influenced artwork.
The bottom floor of the Larchmont Public Library is flooded—well, in a manner of speaking.
Larchmont artist Hilda Demsky's "Making Waves" exhibit—artwork painted and drawn onto canvas and metal—is on display in the library's Oresman gallery. And though Demsky's media differs, the theme is consistent: water and the natural environment.
"Inspiration for my paintings comes from the movement of free flowing water," Demsky writes in the exhibit's program. "The torrent of water falling and cascading in a glen, the foaming and splash of it, make a magical symphony."

Recently, Demsky returned from a fellowship in Costa Rica that allowed her to explore her interest in painting nature and ultimately create "Making Waves."
Demsky's work is inspired by the tranquil characteristics of water—but the exhibit avoids becoming stagnant. The artist manages to incorporate variation into her broader theme.

Works like "Sundown" exemplify the tranquility she aims for. But pieces like "Storm" and "Acadia Rocks #2" are aggressive and assertive; a violent sea, or waves crashing on a shore.
"There is awe in the power of water to alter rocks and sustain life," Demsky explains in the program.
"Making Waves" is not Demsky's first time displaying work at the library.
"Ms. Demsky has shown her art here in the past, and with good turnout," said Nancy Donovan, the library's community relations director. "She's a well-known artist around Larchmont—people know her name."
"Making Waves" will run from June 2 to June 29, and the library will host a Meet the Artist reception on June 12 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
