1 Dead, 2 Injured In Small Plane Crash On Long Island: Police

NORTH LINDENHURST, NY — One person is dead, and two people are critically injured following a small plane crash in Lindenhurst on Sunday, Suffolk County Police said.
A single-engine Piper PA 28 that took off at Republic Airport in Farming at about 2:18 p.m., police said.
A short time later, the pilot issued a mayday signal and indicated there was smoke in the cockpit.

The aircraft turned back toward the airport at about 2:58 p.m. to make an emergency landing before crashing near the intersection of Wellwood Avenue and 5th Street in North Lindenhurst about 300 feet south of the Long Island Rail Road track, police said.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Two occupants of the plane were taken via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

North Wellwood is currently closed between Colonial Road and Route 109 as a result, police said.
