Chateau La Mer Hunkered Down for Sandy's Hit

GM Nick Cascio says the catering hall was hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst as the hurricane approached on Sunday.

Long-time Lindenhurst business Chateau La Mer sits at the end of South Wellwood Avenue, next to the Marina (Lindenhurst Docks), and its seen its share of storms.

And Hurricane Sandy is the latest storm the catering hall braced for.

General Manager Nick Cascio told Lindenhurst Patch on Sunday was buttoning up the place as best it could in preparation for a storm that's expected to produce record flooding - a prime concern given the business' location right on the Great South Bay.

Last year during Irene the catering hall took a hit, with water coming over the patio and losing for power for several days.

But, like last year, Cascio said preparations this year included sending all of the food to another location, putting the trees down on the patio, raising the furniture inside three feet, sandbagging some of lower outside doors and securing files and other non-perishable supplies.

But, he said, Hurricane Sandy could be bad, and it also caused the hall to cancel an event that was scheduled for Sunday night.

"It looks like we're going to take a hit," he said on Sunday.

And with a mandatory evacuation in place for South of Montauk Highway, plus reports of heavy flooding coming in on Monday morning from those streets as expected, Cascio said on Monday they can't even get down there.

So they're hoping for the best, but have prepared for the worst. "We did all we could do, and now we wait."
