Lindy Alum Organizes Gilgo Beach Cleanup This Saturday
Lindenhurst resident Meaghan Chambers is seeking volunteers for an event she hopes to make an annual one.
One recent alum is cleaning up - , that is.
Twenty-year-old Meaghan Chambers has organized a clean-up of the Town beach that’s set to take place this Saturday, September 15, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“I decided to start the beach clean-up mostly because I enjoy doing community service, and I’m passionate about taking care of our environment,” Chambers told Lindenhurst Patch in a recent e-mail about the event.

“I’ve been going to Gilgo Beach my whole life, and have noticed time and time again the amount of garbage that resides on the beach by the end of the Summer season. There’s an uncountable amount of cigarette butts, pieces of plastic, can tabs, chip bags, Styrofoam, etc. The list could continue on and on,” she said.
So it’s her intent to remove the junk, garbage and debris from her beloved beach. And she’s looking for some more volunteers to help with the clean-up.

“The Town of Babylon has offered to provide bags and gloves for all of the volunteers who wish to participate. They’ll also provide certificates to those who wish to receive them as a thank-you for their participation in the event,” Chambers said.
Volunteering for the clean-up, she said, involves “collecting unwanted garbage from the beach - and bringing a positive attitude to the event!”
According to Chambers, the main purpose of the event is to raise awareness about protecting not only , but also all of the Town’s local beaches.
Another purpose of organizing and executing the clean-up is “to make people more aware of how much human waste is left at our beaches, when this is 100 percent avoidable - especially because of the garbage cans located on the beach!” she said.
This is the first year of the event, but Chambers hopes to make it an annual event, and quite possibly a bi-annual event - before and after beach season).
“Although I’m the one who’s created this particular event, the Town of Babylon has helped me reach out to the Long Island Beach Access Group which has also agreed to join me in cleaning the beach.”
