LHS Class of 2012 valedictorian, salutatorian and president and student council president invited by district to give speeches at June 27 Board of Education meeting.

The students whose speeches were cut at Friday night's graduation are receiving a second chance to deliver them on .

Those students include Class of 2012 Valedictorian , Salutatorian , Class President Kayla Erb and Student Council President Toniann Riselvato.

Rinaldi, Kelly, Erb and Riselvato weren't able to give their speeches because a second wave of thunderstorms moved through the area during the June 22 ceremony, causing it to be cut short.

Many were upset by the shortened ceremony, and felt the should've postponed graduation to the rain date on Saturday, June 23, instead of continuing with it after an initial line of thunderstorms threatened the ceremony at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Regarding the sentiments expressed by the community, the superintendent didn't comment, but noted the decision was made at 4:30 p.m. that day based on weather predictions at that time.

"Our students and their families always remain foremost in our thoughts when we make decisions like this," Nathan said.

LHS Principal Dan Giordano announced at the end of the ceremony the cut speeches would be posted on the district's website in lieu of their presentation.

And now Rinaldi, Kelly, Erb and Riselvato will have the chance to record their speeches and to deliver them to the community at the June 27 end-of-year BOE meeting - which begins at 8 p.m. at the McKenna Administration Building, 350 Daniel Street.

"They're (the district) is taping their speeches during the day on Wednesday, and putting them on their website, and on YouTube, and they'll be able to speak at the Board of Education meeting," Kathy Rinaldi, John's mother, told Patch on Tuesday.

She said her son was disappointed he wasn't able to deliver his speech initially: "He worked hard, and he didn't get to give it."

However, she said Giordano called the next day to apologize and to tell her the district's plans.

"I think that was a nice gesture," she said.

It's sentiment shared by Kayla's mother, Karen.

"My daughter was disappointed, but you can't control the weather. I knew Mr. Giordano would get it all worked out," she said. "I like the fact they're getting the opportunity to give their speeches."

Riselvato said she's also glad she has this second chance.

"It was a little disappointing and bittersweet, but I'm grateful to have the chance to tape my speech and share it with the community," Riselvato said.

And despite having her speech cut and the ceremony cut short, she added, "It didn't change anything about my high school career. I still have a lot of great memories."
