Lindenhurst School District 'Vigilant' Ahead of Sandy

Superintendent tells Lindenhurst Patch the District is 'being vigilant' and is monitoring the latest forecasts for the hurricane.

The Lindenhurst School District is keeping an eye on the progress of Hurricane Sandy - which, according to the latest forecast on Friday, is predicted to eventually make landfall at the New Jersey-Delaware border and could still bring extreme weather to Long Island.

The forecast currently calls for Long Island to get between four and six inches of rain with the South Shore possibly seeing more. In addition Long Island has a 30 to 40 percent chance of getting tropical storm-force winds between 39 and 73 mph.

Given the forecast Superintendent Richard Nathan told Lindenhurst Patch on Friday afternoon the District is "being vigilant."

"We need to watch the storm, and this afternoon we're talking with the Village about emergency preparedeness," he said.

Right now, Nathan said, there are no plans to close due to Sandy, and if the decision is to close as a result of updated forecast over the weekend, then a School Messenger message will be sent to homes alerting parents.

Updates will also be posted to the District's website.

He said there are a lot of issues to consider and that would go into whether or not the District decides to close the schools - flooding, power, branches in roads, etc. - depending on how bad the storm turns out to be.

But above all, Nathan said, any decision that might be made as Hurricane Sandy approaches would be made to keep students safe.

"The health, welfare and safety of our students are paramount to us," he said.
