LMS Denim Day Raises Money for Breast Cancer

The Lindenhurst Middle School staff's participation in Lee National Denim Day last Friday raised $1,000 for breast cancer awareness. This marks the school's 15th year of participation.

For the 15th consecutive year Lindenhurst Middle School teachers, administrators, coordinators, aides and support staff participated in Lee National Denim Day last Friday.

Lee National Denim Day - which this year was held on October 12 - was created to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The breast cancer awareness effort at the LMS was organized by seventh-grade science teacher Lisa Nelson.

Participants were encouraged to donate $5 for the right to wear jeans to work, and in the end a $1,000 was raised.

The money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society to help fund research grants working to find a cure for breast cancer and community-based breast cancer screenings, according to school officials.

The ACS program has raised more than $86 million for the fight against breast cancer, added officials.

“We wanted to support this program because many staff members have had their lives touched in some way by this terrible disease,” Nelson said.
