Post-Storm Flooding Plagues S. Lindenhurst (Photos)

Lindy residents say a number of streets South of Montauk Highway continued to flood at high tide during this past weekend, even after last week's Winter storm departed.

Last week's Winter storm finally departed on Friday, and while Village officials felt on late Friday afternoon Lindy weathered the storm, Lindenhurst residents and readers of Patch were still being plagued with coastal flooding at high tide this past weekend.

They reported widespread flooding on Thursday and Friday, as well, and the Village of Lindenhurst had originally expressed concern about Thursday night's and Wednesday night's high tide, too.

This on-going flooding added insult to injury in an area hit hard after Hurricane Sandy on October 29.

Here's what some of them who live South of Montauk Highway from the Village to Venetian Shores and the Venice described throughout the weekend - along with the Lindy Lens photos they posted (see above) - on the site here and here, as well as on Patch's Facebook page, here, here, here, here and here, and Twitter feed, @LindyPatch:

Bill Shea: "Been down in South Lindenhurst this morning (Friday), and most of the streets are closed to the [Great South] Bay are flooded again. I know it's time to close that breach in Fire Island now. These poor people have had enough!"

Ed N Tara White: "Glad someone sees it like me. I know the elected officials could care less. Lindenhurst is with you."

Colleen Kelly Lisi: "I know I've had enough! Ugh...same in Amityville. People are so tired of all this...they're not going to close the breach."

Lori Hegel Comerford: "Something needs to be done. The sooner the better!"

John posted on Patch: "The Town needs to fix the sewers. That's we're the majority of the water comes from."

Debra posted on Patch: "Lindenhurst Village loves to be a seaside community, and keeps on collecting those Village taxes, but forgets about the people down by the water during rain, snow and wind storms. Keep piling the snow drifts in front of my driveway, Lindenhurst, while the Village leaders are safe and sound."

Ann posted on Patch: "Saturday, March 9, at 8:50 a.m. Brook Street and Shore Walk is flooded 15 inches deep. The flooding is from the storm drain. Very, very concerned....It's day three of the flooding (Saturday morning). The water is 10 inches in front of my home, about four feet up the walkway. Contractors came to do work on my home and left. Brook and Shore Walk is a majority area. We ask for government assistance in this matter. Help us."

CGrubel posted on Patch: "Well, it's Saturday morning, and all of the water is back again, and over an hour yet till high tide...day four."

Angela Vanleuvan Simpson: "Water is high now; three times in two days a river ran down Surf Street (Friday evening)! Surf Street is under water, was as of this morning (Saturday)! Was under water last night too! So the water hasn't receded!"

Barbie McAleavey Champlin: "Hasn't receded at all by East Shore Drive and McKinley Avenue (Saturday). The flooding last night and tonight was far worse than Wednesday and Thursday. Something needs to be done because living by the tide cycles is no way to live. When the tide goes back in, the water just sits at the corner, so something must be clogged or blocked."

Joan Ensulo: "Bayview Avenue West flooded again (Saturday morning)...Wellwood, Spring to Atlantic...horrible...I got my bumper caught on a bush after putting my car on my lawn...for safety...lost truck in Sandy; got no money for it; not enough insurance; not making same mistake again...too scared....I just got a call from my nephew - from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., possible flooding again (Saturday night). Anyone hear this? Thursday was flooded pretty bad. Friday flooded, so this morning was bad - going up my driveway, end of block, dead end, water still there, not going down. But now I heard this for tonight (Saturday). What's going on? Anyone know? Thanks."

Shea posted on Facebook on Sunday: "I'm angry, very angry! I'm not a resident of Lindenhurst, however, since the Sandy storm I've spent most of my waking hours helping the people of Amityville, Copiague, Lindenhurst and Babylon get their electrical utilities back in order. They're struggling to repair their homes and get their lives back in order. And for what - to have a breach which must be closed to destroy what they just repaired? One step forward, two steps back! Plug that hole once and for all!"

Edward Walz "I agree. The water level has risen in the [Great South] Bay. It may even need to be dredged."

Rocco Patto: "The common sense answer is to fill in the breach. Hurricane Sandy was a monumental storm that hopefully won't reoccur again in the near future, and the damage caused was due to its intensity. Sure I agree with letting nature take its course, but this breach didn't happen over time; it was due to a devastating event. The climate has definitely changed and our area is definitely going to have to get used a different, more harsher storm season, but we can't just sit back and let the change destroy us. Raising homes is one answer, but are we also going to build raised driveways to protect our cars, and is everyone going to have to get a row boat in case our street is flooded? If we just sit back and adapt to the change, and not try and stop them, then the future of Long Island is dismal. This is Strong Island, this is our home and we need to do whatever it takes to protect it."

Lisa Patto @LongIslandGrl: "I took a drive around town at 11 p.m. (Saturday), and the blocks were worse than this morning; some had police blocking the roads. There were police blocking Shore Road, the flooding was all over that area, and Venetian Boulevard and Granada up to Harding Avenue Elementary School. The flooding was so bad there was no way you can drive down the street, not even really slowly. The police were there to block anyone from driving down the flooded area. As far as I know there hasn't been anyone evacuated or rescued. My corner is like the cut-off; no water here, thank God."

John Meyers, Jr.: "They shut Wellwood Avenue down last night (Saturday) at Knoll Street."

Juan Calderon posted on Patch: "Lake Street has been flooding twice a day for the last couple of days (Sunday morning)! Definitely nervous since we just finished rebuilding from Sandy!"

Carol Rempe Grubel: "Well, day five of flooding here (Sunday). Road completely flooded; looks like the water was even higher last night than the day before. When is this ending....And again, please please, can someone - anyone - address the issue of the storm drains that back up into the streets each time their is a storm? Five days of flooding, missed an oil delivery, missed mail, missed garbage pickup, kids couldn't get busses for school and last, but not least, no work for me since Wednesday. Don't tell me we cannot put back flows on these drains from the canal. It's expensive? How expensive is it for all of us here who pay taxes and for what?"
