West Gates Second-Graders Become Authors

Students author and illustrate their own personal narratives for "Publication Celebration Day."

Students at the West Gates Avenue Elementary School already have something they can add to their resumes – published authors.

Second-graders in Rosanne Mulholland's class recently wrote and illustrated their own personal narratives for "Publication Celebration Day."

Each student-author sat in a big rocking chair in their classroom and read aloud their book to their classmates.

All of the students received a gold medal to attach to the cover of their books called the "Sensation Second-Grade Scribe Award."

"The students coordinated great books," Mulholland said while the children read their published works.

The class learned about a variety of things from their classmates from a day in the city to a trip to Pennsylvania or the details from their friends' vacations.
