Safety
Patch also in the community these days, and they responded on Facebook and the site. The conversation was not only about crime, but also about the driving habits of the community.
Here’s a look at what they had to say:
Debbie Bennett Masching: “When I first moved here more than 25 years ago, I felt safe totally. Then again I felt safe anywhere I was. I don't think I only don't feel safe in Lindy, but anywhere [now]. The world has changed, and it isn't fair to our kids not to be safe. We need to take back our streets as a community!”
Jackie Connelly Fornuff: “I'm more worried about the many accidents lately. Even tonight [July 1] someone on Montauk Highway was speeding and driving so close behind another car. I really thought an accident was going to happen.”
Linda McLellan: “I’ve lived in Lindenhurst for 55 years, and I feel very safe, except from drivers who speed up when they see a pedestrian in the crossing lane. Don't drivers get it yet? Give yourself an extra five to 10 minutes to where you need to drive, and there’ll be less accidents and deaths.”
Tyler H: “There's more crime here then there was back in Massapequa, but it's not like I'm afraid to walk around the streets at night.”
joeb: “There’s no reason that the Suffolk County Police Department can't have speed traps on Montauk.”
Linda: “No one respects or adheres to stopping at stop signs. I've seen young kids to elderly women wildly curse at me and give me the finger for making full stops at all the stop signs on New York Avenue, and this absolutely infuriates drivers behind me. No one makes full stops, and I’d like to see the police ticket everyone who taps and goes through them.”
Ellen Conti: “I feel relatively safe in Lindenhurst, but I do agree that Lindenhurst drivers have lost the ability to stop at stop signs. I see nothing but pauses at intersections on the back roads all over Lindenhurst. Stop signs are ignored, but they expect everyone else to stop. It has become epidemic.”
Ali: “I live near the Delaware and Herbert Avenue intersection. I can't tell you how many times I've almost been hit (with my two small children in the backseat) by people running that stop sign. It's crazy!
T.M: “The crimes have increased along with alcohol and drug abuse – that’s not to say that never existed before; it’s just that it’s so much larger today.”
