Long Beach Language Teacher to Train in France

LBHS French teacher Arlys Digena was selected for a two-week training program in Vichy.

Long Beach High School French teacher Arlys Digena was selected to partake in a training program for language educators to be held this summer in Vichy, France.

She is one of only 20 teachers nationwide to earn admission to this two-week course through a Stage Pédagogique de Courte Durée grant from the French Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The program is aimed at helping educators fine-tune their methodological approaches for teaching French language and culture, and will also offer insight with regard to instructional materials and other resources for French as a second language. It strives to strengthen professional expertise in classroom management, lessons and unit planning, and assessment and evaluation. The SPCD grant covers tuition, transportation, housing, cultural activities and other expenses.

“I am honored to have been selected and am excited about learning new techniques for engaging students in the classroom,” Mrs. Digena said. “I hope to bring back new ideas for our French program, as well as a new cache of culturally authentic resources that will be interesting to students.” She credits her grant selection largely to her career experience in Long Beach, particularly the International Baccalaureate training she received.

Mrs. Digena teaches French 2, French 3, IB French 1 and IB French 2 at Long Beach High School. She will have the opportunity to collaborate with French teachers from throughout the country and around the world to share ideas and possibly establish contacts for future communications involving students.
