Outstanding 2023 Suffolk County Football Players Celebrated
Awards for athletes and others presented by National Football Foundation

More than 50 of Suffolk County’s 2023 outstanding high school football players were honored at the annual scholar athlete awards at the Marriott Hotel in Melville on April 7. Awards were presented by the James C. Metzger Suffolk County Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
The NFF acknowledged its Golden Eleven Honorees along with Division 1-4 scholar athletes and scholar athletes for Catholic and independent schools. Additional awards were presented to team offensive lines and others associated with local high school football.
The James Conrad Metzger Top Scholar Athlete award was presented by Metzger and the chapter to Caden Lesiewicz of William Floyd High School. The James Conrad Metzger Top Scholar Athlete-Catholic League award was presented to Samuel Cook of St. Anthony’s High School. James C. Metzger is a 1970s Half Hollow Hills East High School and Hofstra University athletic standout. He is founder and CEO of Whitmore – The Agency of Garden City, one of the leading insurance brokerage companies in the New York City area. As a philanthropist, his contributions to community and athletic programs include Long Island youth football and lacrosse.

The Inaugural NFF Offensive Line Award was presented to one team in each public school division.
Division 1: Ward Melville High School – Norman Bergamaschi, Victor Bergamaschi, Bobby Ehlers, Brennan Kurtz, Devon Larsen, Patrik Vasquez
Division 2: North Babylon High School – Jarell Fowler, Alexander Griffith, Daniel Martinez, Elijah Myers, Jake Miele, Christopher Nieves, Benju Registre Jr.
Division 3: East Islip High School – Dylan Bayer, Tyler Cato, Charlie Heffernan, Glendon Kinnear, Sebastian Regis, John Vogel
Division 4: Bayport-Blue Point High School – Patrick Ahern, Ryan Bachmore, Sam DeVore, Jeremiah, Lee, Liam Richman, Chistian Sauer, Dylan Spano
The Gregg Sarra Trophy, named for the Newsday high school sports editor, was presented to Korey Duff Jr. of St. Anthony’s High School as 2023 Long Island Offensive Player of the Year and Sebastian Regis of East Islip High School as 2023 Long Island Defensive Player of the Year.
The 2023 Joe Cipp Coach of the Year award was presented to Sal Ciampi Jr. of East Islip High School. He has coached at East Islip for 23 years. The Norman D. Carter Official of the Year award was presented to Carl Superina. He has officiated games for 28 years.
The Bryan Collins Memorial Scholarship, named for the legendary coach of LIU Post and Stony Brook University, was presented to Nicholas Serrano of West Babylon High School. He will continue his football career at Stony Brook.
