New York Has Over 2,000 New Monkeypox Cases: DOH

Most of the new cases were in Westchester and Long Island, said DOH data.

NEW YORK, NY — As of Thursday, there are well over 2,000 cases of monkeypox in the Long Island, Westchester, upstate and metropolitan areas in New York.

The areas with the most significant increase of cases are Westchester and Long Island, according to data from the state Department of Health.

There were 12 new cases of monkeypox in Westchester, and 12 new cases on Long Island: Five in Nassau County and seven in Suffolk County, the data showed.

The three counties accounted for 98 of the 143 total cases, the DOH observed.

Minorities collectively are impacted the most by the virus at 59 percent, but most significantly amongst that group was the Hispanics/Latino population, which continues to make up the brunt of cases, according to the data.

Hispanics/Latinos make up 33 percent of cases, Blacks 22 percent, Asian and Pacific Islanders 3 percent, and Native Americans and Alaskans make up 1 percent of the cases. People whose background data are missing (1 percent), unknown (11 percent) or categorized as other (2 percent) make up 14 percent of cases.

White people accounted for 34 percent of cases, the DOH noted.

Men (97 percent), lesbian or gay (70 percent) and people age 30 to 34 (24 percent) continue to also be amongst the hardest hit with cases of monkeypox, according to the data.

On Friday, the city Department of Health announced that the state will distribute 9,000 vaccines on Saturday to the Big Apple.

When reached for comment, the state Department of Health has not issued new numbers specifically for the Long Island, Westchester, upstate and metropolitan areas in New York.

HOW TO GET MONKEYPOX VACCINES

WESTCHESTER
Monkeypox Vaccine Clinics on Mondays and Wednesdays at 134 Court Street, White Plains. Appointments are required.
People at higher risk for monkeypox infection may consider vaccination with the two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine. In accordance with CDC guidance, this includes those who:

  • Had contact with someone who had a rash that looks like monkeypox or with someone who was diagnosed with confirmed or probable monkeypox
  • Had skin-to-skin contact with someone in a social network experiencing monkeypox activity; this includes men who have sex with men who meet partners through an online website, digital application (“app”), or social event such as at a bar or party
  • Traveled outside the United States to a country with confirmed cases of monkeypox or where monkeypox activity has been ongoing

Vaccines for the Monkeypox Virus are being administered by Nassau University Medical Center and Northwell Health at this time. Supplies are limited.
