Massapequa Moms Raise Money at Post Sandy Event

The Massapequa Moms know how to help their neighbors and know how to throw a good party.

The group did both last week when they held a get together at the Riviera that raised money for two local families and YES Community Counseling Center.

"We are here celebrating coming together as a group and making it through Sandy,"" said Massapequa Mom's founder Dawn Boyle Kostakis, who said that the event was originally meant to be a social event to relieve the stress of the storm.

But in true Massapequa Mom fashion, the group, which raised cash and supplies in the aftermath of the storm, also found a way to make their party a fundraiser.

"We are doing a 50/50 raffle for the YES program and we're also taking donations from two families from Massapequa that recently lost a parent," Kostakis said.

The party was set to be in the Fall, but had to be postponed.

"Originally this was created for November 8, but because so many were displaced, we decided to postpone it," Kostakis said. "But we never wanted to cancel because we wanted to celebrate all the wonderful things that everyone in Massapequa was doing."

The event drew almost 200 people and Kostakis announced that the Massapequa Moms had been selected as one of the Town of Oyster Bay's Women of Distinction.
