Massapequa Stocks Up For Storm

It has not been a quiet say at the Hess station on Merrick Road.

"We're open 24 hours, people lined up all night," said cashier Blanca Flores. "We're out of regular and we're out of plus. We haven't had a gas delivery in two days."

Despite only having only premium gas available, customers still lined up at the station to get fuel.

Lines were seen in Massapequa throughout Thursday night into Friday.

But gas wasn't the only commodity in demand.

Ace Hardware also did a brisk business.  Customers lined up  with shovels, rock salt and other supplies.

"We've been crazy busy," a store manager said. "But we have everything in stock."

Kevin Starr was a last minute shopper. He picked up a shovel after realizing he needed to go low tech.

"We lost our snow blower in Sandy," he said.  Starr's wife Angela said that for people living in the area of Massapequa below Merrick Road, snow isn't their only worry. "I think we're more concerned about the coastal flooding then we are about the snow," she said.

"We've faced big snowstorms before, but it's the combination of the wind, water and snow that has us quite concerned.

As conditions deteriorated, businesses and offices began to close down. Both branches of the Massapequa Public library closed down at 4 p.m.
