Sweets are also a staple of Valentine's Day, but that can be a difficult proposition for some people.

"It's rough when you have diabetes or a gluten free diet," says Chef Linda Lee who owns The Best Ever Low Carb Cakes, which caters to those who can't have sugar. Lee's Valentine's Day orders have already been filled for Thursday, but since many customers celebrate over the weekend, she can fill any order be it cakes and cupcakes with hearts on them or strawberry shortcakes and cheescake which are popular for Valentine's Day.

There are many area restaurants that can host a romantic dinner. Hudson's Mill has long been a popular spot for Valentine's dates.

For a more casual atmosphere Sal's Place has a special Valentine's Day menu Thursday featuring entrees such as prime rib and Lobster stuffed rigatoni. Sergio's Italian Restaurant has a coupon on their website
