Sulc: Guns Not an Asset in Schools

Massapequa School Superintendent Charles Sulc is taking issue with the NRA's proposal to put armed guards in schools.

"I don't think guns in school systems are really an asset to the mission of any school system,particularly since we're working with more than 8,000 students," Sulc told Patch in response to a question about NRA  Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre's statement last month in the wake of the Newtown school shootings.

Sulc sent a letter to parents after the tragesy reminding parents  that the district maintains a comprehensive emergency management plan.

But the superintendent said the district currently can't arm security workers even if they want to.

"While [LaPierre] may have been speaking on a national basis, both federal law and New York State regulations preclude this district and any public school district from hiring armed guards.

LaPierre ccalled on Congress to change that in a statement on Dec. 21, asking them "To appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school — and to do it now."
