Pat-Med Grad Sparks Debate

Hofstra senior Lawrence Daves helps coordinate presidential debate.

Colin Sullivan was walking at a frenzied pace Monday afternoon, trying to get from one end of Hofstra University to the other. The Assistant Director of Public Relations at Hofstra had an equally hectic set of tasks before him, 24 hours before the school plays host to the second presidential debate.

Keeping in step with him while reading off email queries from Sullivan’s smartphone was Hofstra senior Lawrence Daves.

The 2009 Patchogue-Medford graduate is student co-chair of the Debate Planning Committee.

“Our committee has been meeting since February and the heavy lifting really picked up last month,” said Daves, who is pursuing a Liberal Arts major with a focus in Drama, Fine Arts, and Psychology.

Not only did Daves help Sullivan keep the media crush from overwhelming him, but the Hofstra student was also charged with setting up events during the day and the simulcast locations at night.

“The most exciting part is to be seeing the immense amount of pride the students have for our school being enhanced by the great honor of having a presidential debate two cycles in a row,” Daves said.
