Burglar Foiled By Medford Boy, 12, Who Jumped Out Of His Bedroom Window To Call 911: Police

The boy hid in the backyard to call 911 just before 1 p.m., Suffolk police say.

MEDFORD, NY — A burglar was caught in the act and foiled by a 12-year-old Medford boy who hid and called 911 Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

The 12-year-old was at his home on Eagle Avenue when he heard glass breaking in the kitchen and then someone moving around the house, and he jumped out of his bedroom window and saw an unknown man inside his home, according to police.

The boy hid in the backyard to call 911 just before 1 p.m., police said.

Officers responded to the house within three minutes of the call and found Christian Garcia had broken a kitchen window and was inside the home, police said, adding that the child was not hurt.

It is not clear if there were any adults in the house at the time of the burglary.

Garcia, 53, who does not have a last-known address, was charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, and possession of burglars' tools, a misdemeanor.

Further details were not available.

He was held overnight at the 6th Precinct in Selden and was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if he retained legal representation.
