Baseball Field Rededicated in Emotional Ceremony

Calhoun High School's baseball field was dedicated to a beloved mentor and teacher.

In an emotional ceremony held at the varsity baseball field at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick, the diamond was renamed after dedicated coach, mentor and Calhoun teacher Joe Corea.

During the dedication, Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Director of Physical Education and Athletics Saul Lerner spoke passionately about Mr. Corea’s qualities as both a teacher, a colleague and a friend, as did Calhoun’s Athletic Director June Spruyt. Principal Nicole Hollings read a touching tribute to the retired teacher and coach written by David Seinfeld, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Current Calhoun varsity baseball coach Art Canestro thanked Corea for his mentorship and guidance.

The event culminated with words of gratitude from Corea, who attended the dedication along with his family. He was presented with a plaque replica of the metal sign to be hung above the backstop of the newly named field. A second sign indicating Joe Corea Field was also mounted above the scoreboard in centerfield.
