H.S. Students Create Rain Garden, School Wins $2,500 Grant

MERRICK, NY — Calhoun High School has won a $2,500 grant for helping the environment.

The money will be awarded to the school on Thursday by the Long Island Regional Planning Council.

Students were encouraged to learn about reducing nitrogen pollution and runoff into the waterways as part of the 2021 Long Island Water Quality STEAM challenge.

Upon receiving the grant money, students are expected to install a rain garden with native plants to filter out pollutants and excess nutrients from stormwater runoff.

The garden will provide a natural habitat for birds and butterflies and will serve as a classroom for students in the future.
