Heat Wave Options: Cooling Centers, Beaching Hours Extended

HEMPSTEAD, NY — The oppressive heat has caught the attention of Town of Hempstead officials.

There are extra hours to keep cool through Friday, the town announced at a news conference on Tuesday.

Pools are staying open in the town from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., while beaches will allow visitors until 7 p.m., Supervisor Don Clavin announced.

Another option to provide some comfort from the extreme temperatures, the town is opening air-conditioned cooling centers at various locales, including the Merrick Senior Center.
