Merrick Woman Named Make a Difference Honoree
Patricia Hesse of Merrick won the award for her volunteerism.

Patricia Hesse of Merrick was recently named a 2013 Town of Hempstead Make a Difference Award honoree.
Hesse, an Eucharistic minister and active volunteer at Sacred Heart Church, was nominated by a 97-year-old woman named Lillian who she visits on a daily basis.
Throughout the week, Hesse brings Holy Communion to homebound parishioners like Lillian and volunteers at Mercy Hospital’s oncology unit.
During a visit more than a year ago, Hesse and and Lillian began developing a special bond.
Serious arthritis prevented Lillian from performing routine tasks, which prompted her to search for assistance and Hesse volunteered to help.
Every morning, Pat visits Lillian to make her breakfast and help with her medication. She often returns later in the day just to check in.
After her morning visit to see Lillian, Hesse goes to volunteer at weekday masses and funerals. As a consolation minister, Pat also meets with grieving families to plan for funeral masses.
“The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in a woman named Patricia Hesse,” Lillian wrote in a letter.
Each year, Town of Hempstead officials gather to honor individuals who strive to improve their communities and help their fellow citizens.
