The Class of 2023 graduation ceremonies included speeches by the valedictorians and the salutatorian.

MERRICK, NY β€” The Calhoun High School Class of 2023 received their diplomas during graduation ceremonies on Sunday.

Principal Nicole Hollings told glowing graduates to take advantage of opportunities that will help develop strength and resilience.

"As you venture into the vast tapestry of the world, remember that true success isn't defined by external measures, but rather by the person you become,” she said.

Co-valedictorian Serena Palmer reminded her peers that they have the power to overcome challenges.

"Have confidence in your capabilities, even when others may doubt you. People may tell you that your dreams are unattainable, but in those very moments you should always remember that you have the power to prove them wrong," Palmer said.

Co-valedictorian Evana Toumazatos told the graduating class that they can inspire others.

β€œKids have hopes and dreams that adults may often scoff at, but it is hopes and dreams that make a difference in the world."

Salutatorian Joseph Fiscella used his experience working in improv to share life lessons. He said the two rules are taking risks and saying yes.

"Rejecting suggestions and saying no to questions kills improvised scenes and any chance of
development," Fiscella said. "We graduate with the guarantee that new places and people will challenge us with a sea of curveballs and setbacks. However, by accepting these new circumstances with conviction rather than rejecting them."
