New 'No U-turn' Signs Unveiled at Old Mill Road School

Students at Old Mill Road Elementary School were not only celebrating Halloween on Thursday, but a new safety installment.

The little ones adorned in their costumes unveiled a new 'No U-turn' sign at the school along with town officials and school faculty. 

"There are no tricks, just treats as we unveil these 'No U-turn' signs that will make the streets a little less scary," Supervisor Kate Murray said. 

A new legislation, sponsored by Senator Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, will prevent motorists from making U-turns in school speed zones. The law will go into effect on Friday. 

"We are taking this very seriously and the fines in Nassau County for making a U-turn in a school zone will be pretty heavy," he said. 

Fuschillo said that a fine for the infraction could cost more than $200.

"School zones exist to help keep students and parents safe while they are going to and from school," he said. "Banning drivers from making U-turns in school zones will prevent accidents and protect families." 

David Feller, superintendent of North Merrick Schools, said that he is grateful for the new signs that will keep his students out of harm's way.

"We are honored that we are the first school in which this sign is presented," he said. "There is nothing more important than keeping our children safe."
