Trooper's Vehicle Struck While Pursuing Driver: State Police

The trooper was hospitalized and later released from Sunday night's crash on the Southern State Parkway, state police said.

NORTH MERRICK, NY — A state trooper's vehicle was struck on Sunday night while attempting to stop a speeding vehicle on the Southern State Parkway, state police said.

Just after 10 p.m., a trooper began to pursue the driver on the westbound side of the Southern State near the Meadowbrook Parkway, police said.

The vehicle fled and stopped in traffic near the Eagle Avenue exit, police said. As the trooper attempted to exit his vehicle, the suspect deliberately sped and struck the trooper's car door, state police said.

The officer was injured as the driver fled again, police said.

The trooper was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a black, four-door, BMW 540. Anyone with information is asked to call New York State Police at 631-756-3300.
