12-Year-Old Shot, Cops Say Suspect Remains On The Loose

CITY OF NEWBURGH, NY — An Orange County child is lucky to have escaped with an injury that is not life-threatening after being shot this weekend.

The City of Newburgh Police Department says that on Saturday, around 9:40 p.m., they received a ShotSpotter alert of gunfire on Commercial Place, within the City of Newburgh. The alert was followed by additional calls, which included a report of a gunshot victim.

Once on the scene, officers found a 12-year-old City of Newburgh resident with a gunshot wound to their hand. The child was rushed to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital by Empress Emergency Medical Services, with what police describe as not a life-threatening injury.

Police say that a suspect remains at large.

As they believe that a significant number of people were in the area at the time of the shooting, City of Newburgh Police would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or may have any additional information. This shooting is being investigated by the City of Newburgh Detective Division and the Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force. The Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force is a collaboration between the City of Newburgh Detective Division, Orange County District Attorney's Office Investigators, and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.
