Student With Weapon Causes Lockout At Dutchess BOCES: Officials

Police said the student had an airsoft gun contained in a backpack.

HYDE PARK, NY — The Dutchess BOCES Salt Point campus was placed on lockout around 11 a.m. Thursday after a report of weapons on campus.

School officials said law enforcement was notified immediately.

Police found a student in the school who had what appeared to be an airsoft gun contained in a backpack. The student was isolated without incident.

Law enforcement and BOCES administrators continue to investigate the incident, and further information will be provided when available, officials said.

Hyde Park Police Chief Robert Benson said the school handled the situation well.

"It was the best possible outcome," he said.

District Superintendent Jason Schetelick said BOCES is cooperating fully with the investigation.

"We are thankful that our procedures kept everyone safe," he said. "We will continue to carefully review all aspects of this incident as we move forward."

Schetelick said that some students may need some additional support and counselors are available to help.

He said if parents or students need assistance they should contact the school principal.
