Woman And Her Dog Killed When Struck By Train

The Amtrak passenger train was traveling south Sunday afternoon when it struck the pedestrian and her dog.

RHINEBECK, NY — A Kingston woman and her dog were killed Sunday when an Amtrak train struck them.

The New York State Police said Carrie A. Gemmell, 36, of Kingston, was trying to collect her dog as the Amtrak passenger train was traveling south around 4:45 p.m. Sunday just north of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge.

Authorities said the woman and her dog were both killed.

The state police and the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office responded to the location. The Dutchess County Emergency Response Team assisted at the scene, and the Mobile Crisis team rendered aid to the family.

State police said the investigation remains ongoing.
