Accused Times Square Subway Shover Charged With Attempted Murder

The woman accused of shoving another woman in front of an incoming train at 42nd Street on Monday has been taken into custody, police said.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — The woman who allegedly shoved a fellow passenger in front of an oncoming train in a Midtown subway station on Monday was arrested after a daylong search, police said.

Anthonia Egegbara, a Queens resident, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with attempted murder following the assault, which happened around 8:05 a.m. Monday at the 42nd Street-Times Square station.

According to police, the victim, a 42-year-old woman, was waiting on the northbound 1-2-3 platform as a train arrived. Without provocation, video showed the not-yet-identified suspect standing up from a bench and pushing the woman from behind, causing her to be struck by the moving train.

The woman fell back onto the platform, suffering "serious physical injuries to her face and legs," police said. She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she was in stable condition.

Egegbara allegedly fled the station on foot. Police asked for help identifying her on Monday, hours before her eventual arrest.

"This unprovoked attack was senseless and absurd," MTA spokesperson Tim Minton said in a statement Tuesday, following Egegbara's arrest. "The City needs to provide additional mental health services to assist those who may endanger themselves and others."
