Fire Breaks Out In 5th Avenue High-Rise, FDNY Says

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A two-alarm fire that broke out in the basement of a high-rise building on Fifth Avenue shot heavy smoke into the Midtown Manhattan air just blocks from Central Park, an FDNY spokesman said.

Firefighters were called to 745 Fifth Ave., located on the corner of 58th Street, around 11:30 a.m. after a transformer caught fire in the building's basement, an FDNY spokesman said. The fire was declared under control around 1:40 p.m., the spokesman said.

Nobody was injured during the fire, the FDNY spokesman said. Twenty-five FDNY units with more than 100 emergency personnel responded to the scene.

Buildings near the fire were warned to close windows due to heavy smoke coming from the scene of the blaze, according to New York City Emergency Management. Firefighters cleared much of the smoke and ventilated the high-rise building while operating on scene, an FDNY spokesman said.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by city fire marshals.
