The musical canceled its remaining shows through Jan. 1, offering customers refunds or exchanges. Jackman is to return to the stage Jan. 6, according to the production.

A revival of the 1957 Broadway hit, "The Music Man" only began previews on Dec. 20 and has an opening night set for Feb. 10. Earlier this week, Jackman paid tribute onstage to the understudies who had stepped up to keep the production going despite the spread of the omicron variant.

"I'm emotional because it humbles me," Jackman told the audience. "Their courage, their brilliance, their dedication, their talent. The swings, the understudies, they are the bedrock of Broadway."
