Rocky Point Beach Closed Over Bacteria, Becomes 65th Suffolk Beach This Week

It will reopen when testing shows the bacteria has subsided to acceptable levels.

ROCKY POINT, NY — Tides Beach in Rocky Point has been closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria, Suffolk County Health Department officials said.

It will reopen when testing shows the bacteria has subsided to acceptable levels.

Tides Beach was one of 65 Suffolk beaches closed this week.

On Tuesday, officials closed 64 beaches ranging from Huntington to East Hampton.

Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott said bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
