Arizona Resident, Cat, Survive 50-Foot Plunge Down Rockland Embankment

Hillburn firefighters helped rescue them and Ramapo police helped her make new arrangements for her cross-country trip.

HILLBURN, NY — A cat and its 80-year-old owner survived a 50-foot plunge down an embankment after missing a left turn off the New York State Thruway on Oct. 31.

Ramapo police officers responded at 8:50 p.m.

Police said a Toyota Corolla was exiting the Thruway and attempting a left turn onto Route 17N; however, the driver failed to properly navigate the turn, instead crashing through the guardrail and landing about 50 feet down an embankment.

The 80-year-old woman from Arizona, travelling cross-country with her cat, were both uninjured, police said.

She was removed from the vehicle with the assistance of the Hillburn Fire Department and was checked out medically by Spring Hill EMS. Ramapo police transported the driver and her cat to the station in order to assist her with arrangements to continue her journey.
