According to Ramapo Police, 33-year-old Matais Lopez of Hillcrest was struck by a vehicle as he walked shoulder of Route 45 in the Hillcrest area of Ramapo at approximately 7:42 a.m. Monday morning.
The first officer on the scene found Lopez lying on the east side of the road near Guzzell's Deli unconscious and unresponsive. Rockland Paramedics pronounced Lopez dead at the scene.
Ramapo Police found the 2011 Nissan Rogue driven by Rony Pierre of Spring Valley pulled onto the shoulder of Route 45 a short distance from Lopez.
According to the police report, Lopez was struck from behind, landing on the hood of the vehicle before falling off to where the officers found him. The vehicle continued a short distance before pulling over. At this time, there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision.
