5 Children Hurt, 2 Dead After Tragic Weekend In NYC: Officials

Three Brooklyn kids were critically hurt in a fire, three kids were shot, one fatally, and a drowning teen died in Queens, police say.

NEW YORK CITY — A tragic weekend in New York City saw five children wounded and two killed across four boroughs over just two days, according to police and reports.

Three Brooklyn kids were critically injured in a fire, two Bronx kids were shot, a teen was shot dead in Manhattan and a drowning 14-year-old boy died in Queens, according to police and reports.

Among those hurt was a 5-year-old girl who was shot in the back while sitting in her car seat near White Plains Road and East 213rd Street about 7 p.m. Friday, police said.

Acting Police Commissioner Eddie Caban said Monday he'd visited the girl, listed in stable condition, at her bedside.

"We promised we would never rest until her shooter was found," said Caban at a press conference Monday. "Princess, 48 hours later, we have two individuals identified in the shooting."

The shooters took aim at a nearby vigil for shooting victim for Justin Rodriguez, who was killed a block away Thursday, NYPD Assistant Chief Joseph Kenny said.

Curtis White, 26, a convicted felon arrested in New York for attempted murder is a suspect, Kenny said.

The 5-year-old was not the only girl to take a bullet in The Bronx.

A 12-year-old was among three people shot on Eastburn Avenue and East 175th Street about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

The 12-year-old, shot in the shoulder, is expected to survive, Kenny said.

A teen boy shot in a Manhattan park was not so lucky.

The 15-year-old was found lying face down in Riverside Park near 154th Street Saturday evening about 6:45 p.m and a suspect, seen throwing away a gun, was arrested, police said.

The teen later died in a Manhattan hospital.

Police said Monday that while shootings are down, they are concerned by gun violence among New York's young.

Sixty-two shooting victims in New York City this year were under the age of 18, police noted. Fourteen percent of people arrested in shootings were also under 18.

Gun violence was not responsible for young people hurt and killed in Brooklyn and Queens.

In Brooklyn Sunday morning, three children were among four critically injured in an apartment building fire near East 17th and Cedar streets about 9:30 a.m., according to the FDNY and reports.

Later that day, in Queens, a drowning 14-year-old boy, was pulled onto Rockaway Beach near Beach 75th Street about 6 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

The boy later died at St. Johns Hospital.
