NYC Weather Forecast: 50 MPH Winds Could Slam City

NEW YORK, NY — Wind gusts as strong as 50 MPH could batter New York City on Wednesday as a potential thunderstorm blows through the area, the National Weather Service says. The city will be under a wind advisory from noon Wednesday to midnight Thursday.

The NWS warns of sustained west winds ranging from 15 to 25 MPH across the region and stronger gusts this afternoon. Gales that strong "will be capable of blowing down limbs, trees, and power lines" and could cause power outages, the weather service says.

The strongest wind gusts are expected to hit the city early in the afternoon, coinciding with the rain and possible thunderstorms expected throughout the day, the NWS forecast shows. The weather service predicts a high temperature near 62 degrees and less then a quarter-inch of rain.

A cold front will blow in Wednesday afternoon behind the thunderstorms and showers, the NWS predicts. Wednesday's low is expected to hit 35 degrees.

Another "surge of Arctic air" will likely blow into the Northeast on Friday, AccuWeather writes, coinciding with the possibility of another springtime snowfall in New York City

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 4pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Areas of fog before 1pm. High near 62. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers before 7pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 35. Wind chill values between 30 and 35. Breezy, with a west wind 17 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph.

Thursday
Sunny, with a high near 47. Wind chill values between 25 and 35 early. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Thursday Night
A chance of rain and snow, mainly after 2am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 34. West wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday
Rain and snow likely before 11am, then a chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 54. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 39.

Saturday
Rain and snow likely, becoming all rain after 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
