NEW YORK CITY—A short, simple tweet by an NFL quarterback for the Green Bay Packers is generating some much needed buzz for a beloved New York City bar struggling to stay afloat amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On June 27, the popular Packer's bar, Kettle of Fish, launched a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising $100,000. The Greenwich Village bar has been closed since mid-March and faces an uncertain future.

"With iconic Greenwich Village institutions in danger of disappearing due to this pandemic, we ask our fans, friends and community to help keep us here for years to come!" the bar's owner posted on the page.

Within 48 hours of launching the fundraiser, Aaron Rodgers tweeted photo of himself inside the bar with the hashtag, "Save The Kettle" along with a link to the online fundraiser to his nearly 75,000 followers. A little more than a week later, the bar has since raised more than $60,000.

"To tell you the truth, the whole thing has been heartwarming, people's responses, but it certainly put an extra skip in our step seeing Aaron tweet it. We were like, 'Whoa!'" Patrick Daley, the bar's owner, told the Greenbay Press Gazette.

According to Daley, Rodgers actually paid an off-season visit in 2019. Other Packer football greats such as Jerry Kramer, John Brockington, and Dave Robinson have also stopped by the bar for games, camaraderie and meet-and-greets.

Established in 1950, Kettle of Fish is not only a famous watering hole for famous football players but for other celebrities as well. Music legend Bob Dylan has also sat foot inside the bar, according to Daley.

Located on Christopher Street, Kettle of Fish recently celebrated its 70th birthday. With the help of generous donors, the owner hopes to see it celebrate many more. To make an online donation to the bar, visit this link.
