Major Verizon Outage Ongoing In NYC: What To Know

Verizon acknowledged the issue publicly on Wednesday afternoon.

NEW YORK CITY — Verizon customers across New York City continue to experience disruptions to their wireless voice and data services Wednesday afternoon.

According to Downdetector, a website that collects user-submitted reports of outages, the Verizon outage has impacted more than 10,000 customers in the city on Wednesday.

The outage started around noon, with the New York City’s Office of Emergency Management advising New Yorkers about the service issues an hour later.

In a post on X, the agency said they were working with their partners and various utility providers "to assess any potential effects on city agencies & essential services."

“We are also gathering information and updates from the affected network providers,” NYC Emergency Management said. “The cause and scope of the outage are still being investigated. We will provide updates if the situation changes in a way that impacts the City of New York.”

Verizon acknowledged the issue publicly on Wednesday afternoon, posting a statement on X regarding the service disruption.

"We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers," Verizon said on the social media platform.

Verizon also later said that its engineering teams were fully deployed and working to address the service issues.

In addition, Notify NYC, the city’s official emergency alert system, noted that the ongoing outage could affect some customers from calling emergency services. They advised New Yorkers to use another device from a different carrier or a landline.

Other areas where significant outages were reported include New Jersey, Miami and Atlanta.

Downdetector showed that more than 175,000 Verizon customers began to report issues with their service by 12:30 p.m. — but still remained elevated later into the afternoon, sitting at nearly 57,000 as of 3:30 p.m.

Impacted users said their phones were in “SOS” mode or had other no signal messages.

A handful of outage reports for other carriers also bubbled up on Wednesday — but companies like T-Mobile and AT&T quickly confirmed online that their services were operating normally. Both suggested that their customers may be encountering issues contacting people with Verizon's service, however.
