NEW YORK CITY – Mayor Eric Adams was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday – the charges were revealed on Thursday – which means that a group of New Yorkers (the grand jury) has reviewed evidence presented by prosecutors and determined that there is legally sufficient evidence to formally charge Adams with a crime.

More importantly, the platform formerly known as Twitter – now X – which has largely transformed into a hub for right-wing extremism and homemade pornography, was at its most entertaining in years on Wednesday night after news of the indictment was first reported by the New York Times.

As an amuse-bouche, enjoy a well-placed “Sex and the City” reference.

The folks over at the New York Times Pitchbot delivered a classic.

Some speculated on the motives driving the federal investigation into Adams.

Or what Adams should have received in exchange for his alleged dealings with Turkey.

Others had unusual theories about the actions that might have led to Adam’s indictment.

And then there are the rats, against which the Mayor has been on a crusade.

The recently indicted Sean Combs made an appearance.

Takes of yore were exhumed.

And many posters recalled a video in which Adams appeared to demonstrate how parents should search their child's room.

Meanwhile, a search for variations of “Adams is innocent” yielded few results.

And finally, one poster recalled the infamous voting lines associated primarily with the 2020 election.

Readers should note that an indictment, which is a formal accusation and not a conviction, is only the first step in what will likely be a lengthy legal process. Adams has maintained his innocence.

UPDATE: A 57-page indictment was unsealed on Thursday morning. Adams is being charged with five federal crimes, including bribery, wire fraud, and illegally soliciting campaign donations from foreign nationals.

"As Adams's prominence and power grew, his foreign-national benefactors sought to cash in on their corrupt relationships with him, particularly when, in 2021, it became clear that Adams would become New York City's mayor," the indictment reads.

NBC New York posted the indictment in its entirety, which is viewable here.
