British Tourists Mysteriously Sickened In NYC: Report

NEW YORK, NY — Dozens of British tourists were hospitalized in Washington, D.C. on Sunday after several of them got mysteriously sick in New York City, according to a New York Post report Monday. The entire group of 51 travelers, 48 of them teenagers, were sent to hospitals after at least a dozen suffered symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, the Post reported.

Several of the tourists had already felt ill in New York and were sick by the time they got to the Harrington Hotel in Washington, where they were staying, the story says. Most of them were back in their rooms by Monday, the hotel's manager told the Post.

"Hopefully they all recover as quickly as they can and can continue on their tour," Ann Terry, the manager, told the paper.

Officials are reportedly uncertain what sickened the travelers and could not say what they were doing in the U.S. The city Department of Health said it's investigating the case and talking with Washington officials.

"Initially we thought it might be food poisoning, but we can’t say that now. I can’t confirm what it was," Vito Maggiolo, a DC Fire and EMS public information officer, told the Post.

The incident comes after health officials said an Australian tourist sick with measles visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other places around the city in February, possibly exposing others to the disease.
