De Blasio Made More Money Than Cuomo Last Year

Both the mayor and the governor will reportedly benefit from the new Republican tax law.

NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Bill de Blasio has taken plenty of losses in his feud with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, but at least the mayor can say he makes more money. De Blasio and first lady Chirlane McCray raked in $223,449 in total income last year, about $11,000 more than Cuomo's $212,776 in earnings, according to the officials' tax returns released Tuesday.

The mayor's $220,188 salary accounted for the bulk of his and McCray's income, his tax return shows. They also earned $33 in interest and $3,228 from tax credits and refunds. They owed $60,896 in federal and state taxes and got refunds totaling $7,541.

Cuomo's earned roughly half the income he reported in 2016 as the royalties for his 2014 memoir "All Things Possible" ran out, according to the Albany Times Union. His income last year comprised his $179,000 salary and various investments, the Associated Press reported. He reportedly owed about $55,000 in state and federal taxes.

Mayoral spokesman Austin Finan noted that de Blasio and McCray are helping put their son Dante through Yale University. They shelled out $51,400 for tuition last year, according to their state return.

"The Mayor is not a rich man. He and the First Lady help their son pay tuition to one of the most expensive schools in the country," Finan said in a statement.

De Blasio and McCray claimed a loss of more than $12,000 on their two rental properties in Park Slope, mostly due to depreciation and mortgage interest payments, according to their federal return.

De Blasio and Cuomo, both self-styled progressive Democrats, have assailed the new tax law Republicans pushed through last year as a financial blow to many New Yorkers. But both officials will reportedly benefit from the changes.
