Former NYC Editor Attacked Cop During Jan. 6 Riot: Feds

NEW YORK CITY — A New York City man attacked a cop while he led a breach into the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection, federal officials said.

Authorities arrested Elliot Resnick, 39, to face a slew of criminal charges Thursday connected to the riots in support of former President Donald Trump's false election claims.

Resnick, a former editor of The Jewish Press and conservative podcaster, is accused of being part of a mob that illegally gathered on Capitol's East Plaza, prosecutors said.

He rushed up the Capitol's steps as a police line fell and repeatedly gestured for the crowd to follow, authorities said. Once near the East Rotunda doors, he grabbed and held a police officer's arm who was spraying a chemical irritant to try to stop rioters from breaching the Capitol, prosecutors said.

"Resnick was one of the first to push their way inside the Capitol through the East Rotunda Doors, entering at approximately 2:26 p.m.," a Department of Justice release states.

Resnick, once inside the doors, grabbed and pulled other rioters into the building, prosecutors said.

Over the course of 50 minutes inside the Capitol building, Resnick entered several areas, including its Statuary Hall and Crypt, authorities said. He then returned to the East Rotunda Doors and "gestured and beckoned rioters outside to come inside."

"Resnick clapped others on the back as he successfully helped them to enter," a release states.

Prosecutors leveled charges of assaulting police officers, obstructing or interfering with law enforcement officers, entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly or disruptive conduct and parading, picketing or demonstrating in a Capitol building, authorities said.

The editorial board of The Jewish Press previously argued that Resnick had been at the Capitol as a journalist, Politico first reported.
