Pools, Penthouses, Live-In Art: What $4K Rent Affords Outside Of NYC

A Miami high-rise condo with a rooftop pool costs about as much as a West Village studio. Just saying.

Surprise, surprise, New York City is expensive.

NEW YORK CITY — Why pay $4,000 for a tiny West Village studio when that rent can get a luxe three-bedroom penthouse in Milwaukee?

Many New Yorkers likely will ask themselves that question after they read the new Zumper study, "What $4,000 a Month in Rent Can Get You in 10 U.S. Cities."

The study released Wednesday was paired with another that found New York City's typical one-bedroom rent reached a whopping record of $4,080 for September.

"The most expensive market in the country, of course, is New York," the study dryly states.

So, what can the most expensive rent in the U.S. pay for elsewhere?

Penthouses, pools and privacy, according to Zumper.

Here are some of the apartments and actual houses New York City's rent can grab:

  • A massive penthouse with panoramic views in Milwaukee. “For $3,900, you can get nearly 2,000 square feet worth of space in this 3-bedroom 3-bath penthouse apartment,” the study states.
  • A newly-renovated three-bedroom home in with in-ground swimming pool in Scottsdale, Arizona. “With 1,896 square feet, you’ll have plenty of room for living and entertaining.”
  • A contemporary loft in Las Vegas covered with comic strip, animation and graffiti art on display. “For $4,000, you can live in an actual work of art, fit for the high-energy lifestyle of Las Vegas,” the study states.
  • A Miami high-rise condo with a rooftop pool. “This 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom condo is luxury Miami living at its finest.”
  • An entire ranch in Boise, Idaho with an indoor swimming pool. “Nestled on 9.5 acres of picturesque horse property in a highly sought-after location, this home offers a 3-bedroom layout plus a bonus room and 2.5 baths … With hiking trails nearby and a beautiful, gated, and fully fenced property, this rare gem is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.”

Curious New Yorkers can check out those properties, and other $4,000-a-month not-in-New York deals, here.

And if life on a Boise ranch doesn't sound too appetizing, priced-out New York City dwellers still might want to look a bit farther than, say, the Garden State for cheap digs.

Jersey City is the second-priciest rental city in the nation, with one-bedrooms going for $3,170, Zumper found.
